Hats Off To....

You know the saying "hats off to...." and then you add whatever you want to compliment? Well let me start by saying that in the past, I've not been a hat girl. I kind of have a big head. And I also have super curly hair. Which just leaves a big poof coming out the back of a giant noggin. Not pretty. But thanks to....

Well, rather....

HATS OFF TO...
straightening irons, and frizz-ease!

I am now a believer in hats. They're great for bad hair. Swimming hair. And just for fun.

And today I'd also like to give:

HATS OFF TO...Hobby Lobby. Who wouldn't want to give their hats off to Hobby Lobby? It's the most awesomest place in all the land. Wanna see what I found there today, for $3.99?

Awesome, right? I don't have a khaki hat. And this one's just the ticket. It's even kind of roughed up in spots. Super cool! (PS...if you don't have a Hobby Lobby...first, my condolences, second, any hat will do just fine. You don't need this one!)

But then I got to thinkin'...why would they have this hat at Hobby Lobby? Wouldn't it be because it's meant to be embellished? I thought about sewing a flower on it. But I didn't want to commit to adding one single color to it. Hmmmmm......

Here's what I got:

I had some thick black canvas type material. I think I used it to make a patch once. I cut a piece about 1 1/2" wide and 2" long. Then I folded in about 1/4" on the sides, and sewed them down. Same on the top and bottom. Now I have a clean edged rectangle.

Next I sewed it on to my hat. I used a straight stitch in black and reinforced it. Then I changed thread and did a really messy zig-zag across the tops. I thought that matched the style of the hat.

Here's the finished patch. I like it. A little extra. Not plain anymore.

What's that? You're not quite ready to take your
HAT OFF TO
my new hat?
Understandable.

How about if we do this?

Or this?

Or this?

I'm whole-heartedly giving HATS OFF TO... fabric covered buttons! Why oh why is this my FIRST time using these little stinkers? My goodness! They're here to stay....FOR SURE!

See....I left the sides of the new "patch" open. And now, all my daughter's cute hair bows, flowers, and stuff....can be shared with Mommy's hat!

Yay!

I even decided to make my very own flower. Just for my hat. And I gotta say...

HATS OFF TO...
this corduroy flower! I think I'm in love! That corduroy was a stinker to ruffle. And I gave up trying to sew through it. This baby is 100% hot glued! But it was all worth it.

HATS OFF TO...
you, my friends!

No, seriously.

Not only are you awesome.....

but you should also immediately remove your hat and put a secret "patch" on it. You'll love it! Promise!!

  2. freakin' genius!!

i also thought you were going to do velcro, but this is much better, because you could wear it without an embellishment and use hair clips.

    LOOOOOOVE (and totally doing this).

I have the exact same hat and added a flower to it a few weeks ago ;) http://amijustmom.blogspot.com/2010/07/hat-for-199-score.html I just wish I had your idea of making a little strap where I could attach them without having to committ to one.
