Leave Me Alone

Recently we celebrated the year anniversary of Michael Jackson's death. I'm not a crazy MJ fan....but I do like him an awful lot. And my kids kind of like him too. My daughter can pick out almost any MJ song and she'll tell you, "Dat's Michael Jackson!" She kind of thinks I like him more than I actually do. She was sure that I ought to have an MJ themed birthday party. And recently, when she got a Princess potty seat, she asked me, "Mom, where's your potty seat?"
I said, "I don't think they make a potty seat for mommies."
"Oh, because you don't want a princess one?"
"I don't think so."
"Oh, because you only want a Michael Jackson one?"

Right.

Anyway, he might be sort of weird. Whatever. I still love listening to Black or White, and Human Nature, and Smooth Criminal, and Dirty Diana. Remember that one called "Leave Me Alone?" That was that weird video with the sorta cartoon-ie parts and the newspapers, and the monkey.
(okay, he definitely is really weird)
Well that's how I feel lately. "Just Leave Me Alone!!"

Okay, not you....
And not my family....
Or my friends....

Mostly just the 10,000 solicitors who knock on my door every day. I'm so sick of it. You know it's summertime when someone comes looking for "the lady in this house."
I kinda want to say, "yeah, I live here....but I 'aint no lady!"
(that would be awesome!!)

I'm not trying to be rude, or difficult. But I get really nervous as a stay at home Mom, opening the door to complete strangers. (who are pushy) And I have a glass door, so if I go to see who it is they know I'm at home. My husband says I should just walk away, and not answer it. But I'm sorry, that is weird. They see I'm home, and then I walk away? I can't do it.

Here's my solution....let's see if it works....

I bought a pre-cut plaque of wood at the 'Ol Hobby Lobby for $1.57. Not bad!

Then I spray painted it an awesome bright yellow color. (PS....if you leave wet spray paint out in 90 degree weather...it bubbles! Who knew? No harm done though...just thought I'd warn you)

Then I found a font I liked (Dokyo). I went through my white letter stickers, and just didn't find one I liked. So I printed some out. I did an outline on a white letter. And I printed it on sticker paper. That way they're already sticky. Score!

Not score....is that I still don't have a die-cut machine, and I have to cut by hand. But it's not THAT bad. Know what you need for cutting small letters?
  • Surgical scissors!! These little beauties are completely invaluable. I love mine. I'm not quite sure where to tell you to get some....I have family in the medical field and I get mine from them. I'd suggest you beg, borrow and plead for a pair....they make cutting the center out of a tiny "G" kind of a dream!

I glued down my paper to the top with my good friend, The Mod Podge. Then I gave it all a good coating.
Know who I love?
Glossy Mod Podge.
I've always been kind of a matte girl. Partly because I just like it, and partly because I bought a bottle that's big enough to swim in. But recently, I bought some glossy Mod Podge, and used it on these bad boys.
Now, glossy Mod Podge and I are secretly cheating on matte Mod Podge.
Please don't rat us out!!

It's now hanging right on my front door.
(try not to be jealous of our gold, beveled glass door from 1989. Try. It's hard, I know!)
Will it work?
I dunno. I hope so.
Otherwise, I'm gonna have to get out my iPod and just put it by the door and put "Leave Me Alone" on repeat. And even though I love Michael, that might get old after awhile.

****post note: We now have a Facebook Fan Page for Less Cake {more frosting} you can also find it in the sidebar with the new funky facebook button. Mostly I just love how that button turned out. That's it.****

  1. I love it! A 'stay the hell away' sign that's super cute! And I'm gonna try the glossy mod podge too - thanks for giving me the courage to 'shine' a little :)

  2. That's a good idea. I use an exacto knife to cut things out, when i'm not using my cricut (which I LOVE).

I really like the yellow paint. :)

  3. love this idea.
strongly dislike those "college students" guilting me into buying something i don't need. :) and it is scary opening up the door to just any stranger. but i'm like you once a look out the window i feel pressure to open the door? is that crazy or what. hope your sign helps!!

  4. I love that, I thought of making one myself. We get a lot of religious solicitors in our neighborhood. this is how Id like mine to read:

    No Soliciting
( except girl scouts selling cookies)

haha, let us know if it works!

  5. I'm not alone in wanting people to "leave me alone"...yeah! I generally just ignore the doorbell until people take the hint but need to get a sign. I'm inclined to be snarky though thinking about: "How can I miss you if you won't GO AWAY" or "Why are you here when I know I didn't invite you".

We're not mean horrible people, but if we want something we'll go to them.

    Turned out great!

  6. this is cute. my mom made a sign to put out during election seasons that says: if you leave any political material on my porch, door or mailbox, I WILL NOT VOTE FOR YOU!

    it works too.

  18. My kids always yell "someone's at the door" and give me away. I'm like you...I have to answer! We even have a door peep hole...but I still feel like they can see me. Anyway, very cute. I need to get something asap! I've had it with them waking me up at nap time by ringing the door bell. I think ringing the doorbell is just rude when you don't even know the person...is it just me?

  19. Love it. You inspired me to make one this afternoon. Been needing one - so glad for the idea. And, i for one am diggin' your front door ;)

  21. So cute! Hope it works! My husband just came back from Home Depot this weekend with the UGLIEST and BIGGEST plastic 'no solicitors' sign to hang above the door bell. I just looked at him and he said 'yeah, I will return it'. hahah! Yours is way cuter!

  22. I am afraid I'm going to have to put up a sign. We have people who come from three different if-you-aren't-going-to-our-building-you-ain't-doing-it-right churches to my house on a regular basis. They don't pretend to understand that my family has gone to the same church for 200 years and we aren't changing.

what 'cha gotta say about that? (make it nice, please!) **And if you have a question, make sure to get me your e-mail address...I'd love to answer you!!**
