That's a Cheezy Idea!

I'm not sure I'm quite ready to completely hop on the Halloween band-wagon. I've kind of been dragging my heels, determined to wait until October 1st. But I've been getting ready to join up over at the Spooktacular September @ eighteen25, and my kids INSISTED that I take them into the newly filled isles at our friendly neighborhood Target. Maybe it's inevitable. And I should just give in and put up the black & orange already?

Nah.

I gotta wait at least one more week!

But....while tracking down said Halloween Decor at Target....I wandered into what I thought was a "candy" isle, and saw what I thought was a giant jar of candy pumpkins!

Upon further inspection....it's obviously just a giant jar of off-brand cheese balls. Gross.

But I couldn't get these little guys out of my mind. And how I loved all their little round orange goodness...and how I wished that they were some kind of Halloween surprise.

So I returned. I decided to hunt down a smaller quantity, but alas, all the bags were puffed worms only. BOO! So I am now stuck with a GIANT jar of cheese puffs.

Meet my friend the food coloring pen. Now we're new friends. And from my research, I learned only to make friends with the "Americolor pens". I bought mine at a local food supply store. But I know you can buy them online as well. I think we're gonna be besties.

I decided to make my little cheezy puffs into the vision I had in the isle....

I thought they were pumpkins....
It might have been a mirage....
Or, they might have been calling out to me....TO BE PUMPKINS!

Now here's the tips:
  • Soft! I'M TALKIN' BARELY THERE...pressure. You barely have to touch them.
  • Try to use the cheezier ones. I know, seems it should be the opposite. But the cheezier ones have a better writing surface. The others are just too porous.
  • Keep a napkin/paper towel handy. (both for your fingers, and to lightly take cheese off the end of your pen.)
  • Embrace imperfection! Some will look kind of lame, but together, they're darling!
  • It's a tiny bit time consuming, so I sort of padded the jar with some that weren't decorated, on the inside.

My jar needed a tag and some ribbon. Cause it told me. (and because I'm a weirdo like that)

How cute would this be for that BOO! thing people do in the neighborhoods? Not our family. But other people. You see...in 9 years of living in this house, we've NEVER been "BOO'ed". I'm not whining. I think it has a lot to do with living on a busy road, next to a street light, with a glass door. At least that BETTER be what it is. 'Cause otherwise I'd fall asleep crying in my pillow every night. Okay, people hate us. *tear*

And just in case you think this is completely crazy pants....and WAY too much work for a cheese puff....

They're WAAAAY cute like this too. And you still get the picture. Right?

When are you putting up your Halloween decorations? Can you resist?

  2. I saw those the other day and thought "what the crap would I ever do with all those" You are a creative genius...and a little crazy pants as well. But I already knew that. I'd Boo you if I lived there...although it may be that everyone wants you to Boo THEM...so they get those holiday sugar cookies of yours. You can't BOO someone and get it back from them..it just doesn't work.

  5. Those are so cute! I wouldn't have thought about doing that!

I haven't pulled out anything yet either. I actually don't do much Halloween decorating at all. I mostly just do fall since it would be up longer and then just throw in a Halloween piece here and there. I promised my husband that I would wait until closer to the start of Fall to start decorating for it but I'm itching! He's in and out of town this week and I warned him he will probably come home to some fall decor. At least I waited until the double digits of September...right?! lol

  6. Wow...what more can I say?
I can't believe you've never been "booed". Watch out...The ghosts are coming soon... I CAN'T WAIT for HALLOWEEN. I want to decorate RIGHT NOW, but, the not-so-crazy-about-Halloween husband will disown me if I do.

  7. I saw these in a bowl (undecorated) at a halloween party last year and labeled "pumpkin poo" and the kids were going crazy over them - not sure if it was because they were cheese balls or because it was labeled "poo"!

P.S. I have NEVER been "boo'd" either - I have boo'd plenty of times but never been on the receiving end.
