I Have a Dream

This is a VERY rare (in fact, I'm not sure it's ever happened) 2nd entry for one day.

Sometimes, as a blogger, I'm reluctant to blog a 2nd entry for selfish reasons.  Because I don't think enough people get a chance to look at my first post.  Isn't that silly?

It is.
It's dumb.

I have something else to share today.  If you're sick of me....I'm sorry.

But I would be extremely ungrateful to skip the opportunity to share my gratitude for the holiday that we celebrate today.

I love teaching my kids about the reasons why we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day today.  I love their responses when I tell them that he was an outstanding man who made it possible for ALL people to enjoy the freedoms that our country has to offer.

Particularly because kids are born without any prejudice, and ask questions like,
"you mean some people couldn't go to the school that they wanted?  Or eat dinner at the restaurant that they wanted?"

"That's right."

"Well that's just dumb."

Yep.  It is.

I am grateful for the people who gave their lives to teach us things that we obviously couldn't learn as a society on our own.

I am touched and inspired by a man who taught...

Everybody can be great,
because anybody can serve.

Thank you to all the people in our world, both in the past, and currently, who inspire the rest of us to be better. To love better. To serve more. To have dreams. To be kinder.

I vow, on this day, to do what I can to be a better person.  And to teach my children.  So that the mistakes of the past, do not need to be repeated in our future.

As my gift to you, feel free to print this 8x10 with a quote from Dr. King.  (as always, please do not alter printables, sell them, or claim them as your own.  If you re-post them, be sure to link back to this site.)

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

  2. Thanks so much. I am going to print this and use it in my classroom if that is okay. I do not allow my students to use the word hate. I have my own reasons (like having been to concentration camps) that our beyond their first-grade knowledge and so I just tell them it is a hurtful word and there are other ways to say we don't like something or we disagree. They loved the book I read them about MLK (and it emphasized not using hate).

  5. What a wonderful sentiment L! The thing that I love most about MLK are all of the wonderful thoughts and quotes he left us with.

The quote you noted about service is one of my most favorite and the one you used on that lovely print was something I tweeted out earlier!
