One year, when I was 7, my Dad took me to get an Easter dress and matching hat and gloves. I KNEW I was fabulous that Easter. (In retrospect, I kinda wasn't. But that doesn't really matter)
I also remember another Easter when I got the most FAB white number. And I remember feeling REALLY pretty that day too. Until I walked into Sunday School, and one of the boys made fun of me in front of the whole class.
I was mortified. And I never wore it again.
(And I might be tempted to send that boy all my therapy bills for my WHOLE life. What? I admit. I still have adverse feelings about him!)
But even that tragedy didn't deter me from needing an Easter dress.
(It also didn't deter my Mother from singing "In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it" every time we shopped for Easter dresses.)
I still feel the need to buy something new for Easter, when funds allow.
But my daughter? That's a whole new ball game. I MUST do Easter dresses. Must.
Way back in the winter, I saw this fantastic post from The Cottage Home for a BEAUTIFUL dress.
I vowed that I would try it. I knew I wouldn't get it done for the holidays. But I thought I could shoot for Easter.
Of course, I procrastinated. But it is done. And I L-O-V-E it.
Let me begin by thanking Lindsay with The Cottage Home, for posting such an AMAZING tutorial. And for being gracious enough to share the pattern.
Are you kidding me? Patterns are so expensive!
So nice. Thank you Lindsay!
Her blog is so full of yummy creations. One of my favorites to drool at. And wish that one day, I would learn to REALLY sew.
Guess what? I don't need to show you one thing. If you want to make one, Lindsay's tutorial is comprehensive, full of great photos and pretty much all you need.
I love the results! Love! My daughter was pretty pleased with herself too. It's a great twirling dress.
And just because I know someone will ask:
The fabric is Disco Flower in Tangerine by Amy Butler
Isn't it delish? I went to the fabric store, and this one called to me. No, YELLED at me. In a way like, "hello! You love me! You love the pink and orange and graphic flowers, and you want to make me into a dress." And in fact, I totally DID!
Look at that marvelous, gigantic bow! She loves it and calls it her "Peter Cotton Tail". She'll sing the song really loud too. Awesome.
And can I give a shout out to those fabric covered buttons? Seriously. Those might be my favorite part.
No. They ARE my favorite part.
So here's to Easter Dresses. And being pretty. And for keeping our precious daughters feeling beautiful!
And blaming mean boys from our childhoods for ALL our insecurities.
I love Easter dresses! I remember when I was little that my mom would dress me and my sister alike. We were soo cute, though at the time we didnt think so.
ReplyDeleteI wish my daughters would let me dress them up still.
Oh yaaay! I just bought the fabric for mine last night (now who's the procrastinator?!), and seeing yours has made me even more excited to get it put together! I'm making mine in a 7, so I'm a little nervous about enlarging the pattern... but I'm REALLY excited to get it on my girl! And I'm covering my buttons, too!
ReplyDeleteDarling! My mom used Lindsey's tute for my youngest's dress, too. :) I adore that sash/bow!!
ReplyDeletei remember easter dresses too!! this is too cute - esp the huge bow or i mean "cottontail" ;)
ReplyDeleteOh don't worry my daughter TOTALLY gets Easter dresses as well. i really think it's a fashion staple of life.
ReplyDeleteOmigoodness! This is the cutest dress. I need to build my sewing skills cause I can totally see my daughter wearing something like this.
ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFUL!! Is it too late to order two for my girls on Sunday? ;)
ReplyDeleteI would have never thought to use this fabric for an Easter dress, but it is just perfect! You did an AMAZING job and I can see why you are proud......you should be!
ReplyDeleteI am planning on offering some patterns for sale in the future, but I will always try to keep some free ones on the blog - it's just a nice thank you from me to you for all my sweet, sweet readers.
Again, awesome job and I can't thank you enough for sharing with me - it makes writing these patterns totally worth it!
Have a great day and a very happy Easter,
Lindsay
It brought tears to my eyes to read your sweet post and see your precious daughter in that dress. The Cottage Mama made those dresses for my granddaughters to wear at my wedding in November. All the girls--The Cottage Mama and me, too, were twirling and feeling beautiful on that day! Bless you and your family!--Jane
ReplyDeletethis makes me smile so much! my mom made me and my little sister matching easter dresses every year when we were young.
ReplyDeleteIt came out great!
That's really cute! I bet your mother is so proud of you for sewing your daughter a dress! Wasn't she the queen of making homemade clothes? Maybe that was my mom. Either way I commend you for doing it 'cause I seriously hate sewing and don't even dare attempt an article of clothing. Well done!
ReplyDeleteJust featured you on my blog today as an inspiration for me...I need to make a dress for my daughter!!
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful Spring Day!

Oh I love it!!! So fun to meet you today.
ReplyDeleteWhat?! You made a dress?! Wow! I am so impressed!
ReplyDeleteAdorable!
Eep! I love the big bow! I have no girls, so I'm living vicariously...but you better believe my boys will be in argyle vests and bow ties. ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd big hugs to you {big smacks to the nasty boy who made fun of you!}. I wore a cobalt velvet dress to my confirmation {I know how awful that sounds} and felt beautiful until some jerk called me a blueberry. *sob*
Thanks for sharing the beautiful dress!
my dear... i am so impressed!! you are a rock star!!
