How Being Dimensional....is MAGIC!

Remember when I dolled up my JO TOTES bag?  Well, part of that project, was to add a little "Ellie G" to the bag.  Particularly since a big part of the reason I need "Rachel" (that's what I call my big girl camera) is to take photos for my sweet little blog.

I got an idea to finally use my Mod Podge Dimensional Magic.  I've had the bottle for over 6 months.  And for some reason, it scares me.

But I took a deep breath.

I started by putting my logo (and little Mr. Mouse) into a document.  Then I printed it out.  But read this carefully:
  • It has to be printed on a Laser Printer, or the Mod Podge will smear the ink

Gratefully, I had read that tip elsewhere.  I didn't find that out the hard way.
I started out by cutting out each item.  I needed 2 of each pull, one for the back and one for the front.

After they're cut out.  I Mod Podged them to the inside material.
  • The first try, I used some plastic from an old stencil.  And I actually went all the way through the project.  But the end result was a.....
CRAFT FAIL!!

You totally need something that is fairly rigid to begin with.
  • Second try was with a piece of acrylic.  I bought it at a craft store.  It was meant to be used for scrapbooking.  Hard to cut, but doable with some really sharp shears.
  • So glue your first piece onto one side of the acrylic.  Wait for it to dry.
  • Glue the second (identical piece) on to the other side.  And line them up.
  • After that's dry.  THEN cut it out.

After you have your items glued down, cover them with the Dimensional Magic.  This one is a keychain that I also made.  My little logo is sitting under that white cloud.

  • The product is opaque when it comes out.
  • Take out ANY bubbles that you see.  They WILL dry there permanently.
  • Give your item at least overnight to dry.  No matter what.  My other items were 2 sided. When I flipped one for the second side, I woke up to a logo...stuck to the paper plate.  So Sad!!  So if you're gonna have them rest on a "magic-ed" side.  Wait more like 24 hours.  To be safe.
Won't lie.  Dimensional Magic is a tid bit testy.  Kind of like me.

Couple more tips I learned:
  • If you need a "hole" in your item, put it in BEFORE you put on the "Magic".  Weird.  But as long as you're careful...it won't drip through.
  • Did I mention get the bubbles out.....not kidding.  And sometimes pins didn't cut it.  I just stuck my finger in there and smoothed it out.  That little tip is NOT on the bottle. :)
  • Seemed like it got even harder after a couple days.  So this is NOT a last minute project.

But the results were great, once I figured it out.

And my bag is happy.

  1. That is so cute. What a clever idea. This may be a silly question, but how do you know if it's a laser printer? It doesn't have ink cartridges? I have a couple of Graphic Fairy crafts I want to do and it said to use a laser printer.

  3. Love this!!!!!!! I have a bottle of that stuff that's been sitting around for a while too. Eeek. I wonder how it would work on shrinky dinks? I don't have a laser printer, but I might have to try to see if it would smear the sharpie or colored pencil. I shall have to ponder more, before I get the guts to try it out.

  8. I have used Dimensional Magic for necklaces and one of the things that works for me to keep bubbles out is to let the D.M. drop onto the piece instead of squeezing it directly onto the piece.
